If you are not doing enough damage, check what the monster is weak/strong against (if you use a sword with fire element, it does way less damage on monsters strong against it and vice versa. Note that if a weapon has multiple elements, only the one that does the most damage will take effect, and gun element bonuses only take effect when firing a bullet of said element).
If you are getting hit too much, attack less and observe to learn how to dodge the different moves.
If you still can't dodge, block.
Also try hitting different parts to see what takes the most damage.
This is pretty much all advice I can give without knowing more about your situation

I played mostly melee and with my crappy bullets*
I you are around diff 7, I can give a hand (but I am not so good xD)
*I found by chance some thread about over head sth bullet, that seemed way OP, so I used them a bit to test but not too much (I do not like too much OP stuff). I aggree it is is waymore easy to hit with them as I usually play with my controller and targetting is not so accurate (much better with mouse)
traditions ;)
