Game crashing on start, please help
A friend of mine cannot seem to play regular Halo Wars without mods. He can play regularly with mods installed, however when he uninstalls them his game crashes on start.
He has tried restarting his PC, uninstalling and reinstalling his game and verifying the integrity of his files.
His PC Specs are below:
CPU:
Intel Core i5 @ 3.90GHz 11600K
Skylake Technology

RAM:
32.00 GB, DDR4

Motherboard:
ASUSTeK COMPUTER INC. TUF GAMING Z590-PLUS (LGA1200)

Graphics:
4095MB NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 Super (MSI)

My theory is that something on his PC is causing the crash for the standard Halo Wars and the directory to the mod helps him get around that crash.
His pastebin for his DxDiag is here: https://pastebin.com/WjhC52eV

Any help is appreciated, thank you.

I have the same issue. Works if I play it modded, but I can't use any skulls. Crashes after splash screens if I try to launch vanilla. Verifying cache, reinstalling, restarting pc didn't work either. Was able to play it yesterday just fine, but today it crashes.

If it only started after you modded the game there are probably files being saved from the mods in the files. These can be a small reference in a cache file that doesn't get removed upon uninstall or verify files

Check where you have the game files installed, uninstall the game, then manually delete the leftover files. Typically these can be found in your steam folder (Steam->steamapps->common->HaloWarsDE). You can delete the entire Halo Wars folder from here

Let me know if that helps the issue!

I am not the OP, but -

It seems others like them and I are having the same issue. This solution did not work, neither do any other fixes I've found despite multiple attempts. For awhile I was able to swap back and forth between vanilla and modded and it seems that way for most people, now vanilla is screwed for some of these people since at least mid November.

If you guys are still having the problem, I found a fix in another thread -
1. Delete all files inside of C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\HaloWarsDE\savegame
2. Disable steam cloud sync
