How to get good at RTS games?

Is it chess? Is it just chess in game form? I wanna get good at this because I wanna see if I actually got any strategic intelligence on my name. I've played this game a couple times and while I do make it through missions, I am very regularly on the back foot and I only make it through those missions after a couple tries.

So for a person who doesn't play RTS, what are some tips that I can take with me to enjoy it?

resources resources resources! many games/levels will be almost games of economics than strategy. as long as you can constantly replace units you loose, you'll find that many other things fall into place. especially online in the good old days, 3v3 matches were pure games of attrition, thousands of units getting destroyed until finally a flank opened up

On campaign right now, Arcadia evac was pretty nervewracking but every mission up until scarab was pretty much exactly what you talked about! It's incredibly fun and the scarab mission is the first one I've failed so far :)

Glad the advice helped! try using warthogs on that mission, they are fast enough to evade the beam
