Use a Controller?
Hi, coming from Xbox 360, I'd like to keep using a controller.

Do you think I could use a controller on the PC version and not get completely destroyed?

Thank you

As someone's who has recently tried both, the keyboard and mouse controls definitely have a serious advantage. So much so that I can't even use the controller as it feels gimped by comparison.

They added group control to this edition. So if you use a keyboard you can specify groups then select them later with the number keys.

Create Control Group Ctrl + # Add Units to Control Group Shift + # Select Control Group 0-9 Create Group Exclusive Alt + # Add Additional Units Exclusive Shift + Alt + #

It's always better to use a keyboard and mouse compared to a controller for RTS games, but if you're just playing casually against the AI, there shouldn't be an issue.

I'm talking about 3v3 player games

If everybody consents to using a controller, it should be fine.

But Keyboards give the extra tactical edge that a controller can't match.

If you're trying to play against people, you're giving yourself a handicap.

I'm talking about randoms.

And that sucks to hear, a controller a way more comfortable experience. There should be a controller-enforced matchmaking mode

It's not a perfect solution but you could always use steams ability to remap controller functions to keyboard buttons. I use a steam controller to play and it's just as good as a keyboard and mouse since i can map control group functions and all the other quality of life stuff that was added.

A 360 pad won't be as versitile due to no track pad and 2 less buttons but I'm willing to bet it would work ok and you'd definitely be able to compete a little better than just using the standard xinput controls

They really need to release an update to use a contoller and the control groups on keyboard in tandem. The game plays much better (at the moment) with a controller because it was made for it. The scroll speed with the mouse is too high with high DPI mouse and turning it down makes navigating wasd too slow I would be playing with mouse and keyboard otherwise.

Either decouple mouse and scroll sensitivity or let players with high DPI mice use controller and keyboard Pweez.

I'm still downloading it so I haven't tried yet but I plan on still using a controller, keyboard and mouse will have an advantage but I can't imagine it being a game winning advantage unless someones super turtling or something. I find most matches are usually won by making better descisions not clicking units faster. The group control feature does sound sexy though, hope they add it in for controller users like Dharkan suggested

I'm so used to the XBL version I have to use a controller. The steam controller actually works surprisingly well with this game. :PotOfGreed:

Yeah the steam controller is very versatile and the pad allows for mouse precision with a game-pad feel.

Everyone here is definitely overstating the "advantage". Few if any players are good enough at this game right now to have a tangible advantage playing this game with keyboard over a player who has only used a controller. It's not really a micro or macro intensive game. And the controller has plenty of built in shortcuts on the d-pad that are inuitive imo. Yes I know you can't create control groups - so what? None of the players I've seen play this game have more than one or two groups of units anyway. It's not like the unit cap is that big...

you should do good if you played on the 360
