Back then it was filled to the max and it was very active (I.E. lots of people moving around doing their stuff, in all zones, leveling, questing or grouping for end-game content). It was a pleasant game at the time. Sure, there was always the Pay-to-Win element to it, but it was genuinely enjoyable enough at least for PvE. And PvP could always be accommodated by grouping with geared-up people to compensate (to some degree).
I stopped for about 7 years, and recently managed to recover my long-lost account, since I used to play via gPotato. The game moved hands several times between those years and I had to contact My.Games support but they were surprisingly very quick at finding my account and helping me getting my characters back. Took about 2 days (this very week).
So, about 7 years later I decide to check, just to revisit a bit for nostalgia's sake. The first map that loaded was the Imperial tower. I saw around... I'd say maybe 10 players in the Tower. Then I walked out of it to explore the main city (Empire side by the way, Yasker's Tower) and the first thing I noticed was the complete lack of activity. No circulation of players around, no one. I mean LITERALLY no one. I checked all the zones surrounding the tower (covering Levels from around 3 or 4, to maybe 10 or so). And I saw absolutely not one soul questing around.
Then I returned to the Tower, and decided to explore it a bit more, went upstairs and there's a room that leads to Yasker's "office" with a teleporter in the room. But before the teleporter, in that same room, there's NPCs there with something to them related to end-game. I saw a couple more super geared-up players there gathering perhaps for dungeons or the likes. They were spawning in and out of that room, logging in and out as well (easy to see when someone comes in because of the Patron visual effect around their head is activated and bright).
I stayed and just observed a bit, maybe 20 minutes or so, and outside of that particular room for end-game stuff, and outside of the occasional players moving about within the Tower and leaving from the Tower's teleporter to maybe go to some other higher-level zones there's NOTHING going on. The global Chat was sparse, just some occasional guy looking for a group, or for trading. That's it. Back then when I played global Chat was filled up every second about something.
Anyway, I assume it's similar over to the Kanian side. Most players who do still play the game are already maxed-out on everything (or nearly so) and if you DO see lower-level players around who seemingly are questing then chances are that they happen to be a high-end player's Reincarnation character instead of a genuine newcomer to the game.
Anyone who might play this game on the "F2P" server without knowing anything about this game is screwed from the start. I did play this game for 2 years and geared up nicely up to around Level 51 or so. And it was a struggle at the time to keep up, and catch up on the dedicated (and rich) players. I wouldn't imagine today for a completely new guy on that server how much work he (or she) would have to go through. Even for me, my character is Level 51, but I have a good idea now how much changed (or was added) since the past 7 years... it's complete insanity.
So yeah, it's dead UNLESS you kept on playing almost non-stop (or with only very short breaks) and never really had to catch up that much and were always ready for a new content patch and was done with it by the next month. If that's the case and you're a veteran and played for at least 3 or 4 years then... sure, it's a niche; those guys do still play it but my observations on just the Yasker's Tower were blowing my mind. There's no more than maybe 20 players at any given time in the Tower, max. I don't think there's more than 100 players BOTH sides included even during day time on a week-end.
I can't even imagine them trying to organize Guild raids or Astral fights or whatever those were called. Or something like Gorluxor's Tower (if that even still exists) would require 20 players to start with. I doubt there's more than 2 Guilds on each sides with that many players at this point.
Anyway, wanted to share this because I actually really liked this game back when I did play it. I'll always remember Asee-Teph (if that's what it was called), the tropical / forest zone with the giant pyramid at the center. That zone was a nightmare for all newcomers when they realized what it meant to be flagged for PvP because you were questing against the enemy faction lol. I think that's probably the part I loved the most out of this game, the leveling... not so much the end-game to be honest. But the leveling was great.
I think rather these old games should be respected for what they represent for our generation of 90s kids. MMO when it was good. So what ever if i dont meet so many players on the way to max level, sure it sucks if the AH isnt used. But i mean its a game thats not played by many players in the west, but it ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ rocks in lore and have books to back it up. And its russian so its pretty ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ cool thing if you ask me. Go Putin!
Btw. Steamcharts shows 33 players playing though steam also lets say via stand alone are playing like what ? 120 overall F2P and P2P ?
to be fair i play wow daily, the biggest mmo in the world... and when im out leveling, i RARELY SEE ANYONE. Idk if thats due to how blizz uses "phases" for each server, but its strange that a game with millions of players, i never see anyone unless im in a hub
