To start, I wouldn't really refer to this game as an "Earthbound Clone" anymore than calling another RPG a "Final Fantasy Clone." It is an omage to numerous RPGs from the 90's (AKA the golden era of RPGs), while also just being a love letter to classic games and 90's culture as a whole, while still very much being its own thing.
If you have any questions regarding gameplay, etc, feel free to list'em. I'd be happy to clear up any confusion or doubts!
That being said, let me know if you have further questions!
Yes. Calling it an EB clone is an insult to games that actually managed to replicate an EB feel achieve a fraction of what EB did.
It has a few glitches, the main character is a total ass, and the plot might come off as social-justice-y. This, however, is all part of the experience which I would call charming, compelling, and nostalgic. It's very faithful to the era it emulates while being its own thing. I played it on Switch, but I'll be buying it on Steam just so I can leave positive feedback and pad sales.
Some of what I actually did like seems to be stuff that other people disliked. Like I really like the art style despite the fact that I think most PS1-era fully 3D games are bordering on unplayably ugly. And while I didn't exactly love the characters I thought their dialogues worked well and don't really get why some people have such a strongly negative reaction to them, even the main character.
Then there were some choice parts that I felt really clicked well, and made the game feel more enjoyable than anything I'd played in a long time. Like, a couple of the later dungeons had a really engaging atmosphere along with some decent puzzles. The soundtrack also had some really good tracks and a lot of variety - I guess if that's a big determining factor you could check out some of it on bandcamp: https://andrewallanson.bandcamp.com/album/yiik-a-postmodern-rpg-official-soundtrack
It's just a really polarizing game. My recommendation is this: go with what you think of the trailer. If it doesn't look good to you I'd say pass.
man it takes balls to take credit for being in QA for this game. if there's anything this game needed more of it was that. monsters keep vanishing utterly in dens i haven't even entered yet.
That's not a bug, at least not in dens lvl8 and lvl9 where you have to use the monster flute to make them appear.
I think it's supposed to work in lvl3 too but won't past some chapter, no idea on that one.
Honestly, I think the game would be much better received if it explained a bit more of the quirky gameplay decisions. Like, I had to read a FAQ on the game's site to understand why I wasn't leveling up early in the game, how to run, how Alex's attack minigame actually works, and what Monster Dens were and how I should be using them.
I assume the dev was going for a "Show, don't tell" approach, but there has to be a limit to that in order to ease your players into it.
Maybe lvl3 really is bugged, but it sounded like you were having this problem in other ones too since you said it kept happening.
Throw it on the pile of stuff that needs to be fixed I guess. Minor compared to other issues though.
But the battles are a drag. They take so long. I'm overleveled where I am in the game, and the HP on these enemies several levels below me is insane. My characters all do piss-poor damage despite having good equipment, and Alex using EP is the only way I can get anything done. The mini-games also take too long, especially when you're using them turn, after turn, after turn. And doing well in the mini-games hardly adds any damage!
The devs are making patches for this, and the game will be way better once the battle system is fixed. I don't know who tested this game and let the devs proceed with this. I've played many RPGs over the decades and this has to be one of the slowest, least rewarding combat systems I've ever seen.
An absolute tragedy. Because the rest of the game is fantastic. I love the low-poly look, the dialogue and story - ESPECIALLY the amazing OST. Hands down the best part of the game.
