But in the end it boils down to your playstyle and if something doesn't work just reset the skill tree and try something else.
Would you say archers are better than mage towers?
Not necessarily, depends on what enemies you are facing and the layout of the map. But since they are cheaper to upgrade I usually focus on those first. Together with your hero, some soldiers as blockers and spells they can usually hold of the first couple of waves while you work on further defence such as a Dwaarp, Necromancer tower or whatever else you wanna use.
For example, if I want mage 4, but mage 3 looks 'meh' and I don't have enough points for mage 4, I dont get mage 3 for now and spend on something else.
Some other upgrades I go for are the cheaper Archers, the Mage upgrade that gets you a 10% discount on the T4 upgrades powers (such as Twister and Death Rider) and the Barracks upgrade that gets you a larger Rally Point range.
