How to get to Big Earl? (The redneck sniper)

I can't get to this guy. The only path I can find involves climbing up literally right in front of him, which he reasonably responds to by shooting me in the face and knocking me off. I literally cannot get up there that way, and I can't find a different path. What do?

Nevermind, there's a ledge by the diner that you have to jump at just right for it to let you climb. Jumped at that ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ thing for five minutes, jesus.

Get a sniper rifle and shoot back at him while you take cover. True that you can climb, but he shoots at you and knocks you out. Meanwhile you're down, his short celebration is over and he gets ready for another shot, therefore doing a lot a damage over time.
