Didn't work :(
I also sent him the game files that are modified by the update from my installation, but it just made his game crash.
This is a common error. It's GFWL failing to fully download or otherwise gets corrupted. Every game forum that deals with GFWL has posts on this one; Dead Rising, Bioshock, Halo, GTA IV, Dark Souls before it switched to Steam.
Good news is, it does get fixed.
The GFWL download gets temporarily downloaded to: C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution
There is a log file in that directory: C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\ReportingEvents.log
The log seems to be for the this month's activities. I'm curious to know if there are failed entries in your friends ReportingEvents.log file.
- Temporarily turn OFF Windows Updates
- Rename C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution to C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution_Old
- Unistall any "Microsoft Games for Windows" software.
- Turn Windows Updates back ON
- Download and install the Microsoft Games for Windows Marketplace Client [www.xbox.com]
The SoftwareDistribution folder is used to temporarily store files which may be required to install Windows Updates on your computer.
** You can remove the newly created C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution folder or keep it. You could then take the _Old off of C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution_Old. If you were to delete the folder itself, it will get automatically re-created and the required Windows Update components downloaded automatically regardless.
There are other 0x80070002 fixes people have reported working. Try this first though since the other fix ideas don't make a lot of sense. But, then, neither does GFWL...
I hope that someone else who has this problem finds your solution and it helps them, because my friend gave up and refunded the game sadly :(
I apologize for the inconvenience.
C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\ReportingEvents.log
LP2 really is a hidden gem. Lack of marketing and wanna-be hipster reviewers did it in. For $5 he should try again. Once you get over the GFWL hurdle, the game runs fine after that.
