What I did to get the game running
Greetings first of all.

I would recommend you to navigate to this discussion first, since it's pretty much what I did, I just want to explain every step I made to help as best as I can:

I'll try to explain how I got these things working in Lost Planet 2:

- Starting up the game (xlive.dll missing)
- Logging into Games for windows Live
Since both didn't work for me at first.

Making the game start

So, a good friend of mine bought the game for me as a christmas gift, and I was more than happy to try it out with him. Problem now is, as soon as I want to start the game, it opens the launcher and both the DX9 and DX11 exe's won't work.
It pretty much doesn't start at all, so I tried starting the game from it's folder, but then it said that the xlive.dll is missing. Ofcourse...

Just to let everyone know beforehand, I'm using the latest version of Windows 10 and the latest graphics driver.

Now, after googling the problem I immediately found out that the problem is, ofcourse, Games for windows Live. Ofcourse it is. I went to the games folder again.
I found the "gfwlivesetup.exe" and installed it, but it didn't help unfortunately.
Still, consider doing it.

For those who don't know the easiest method:
Right click "Lost Planet 2" in the steam library, go to properties and navigate to "Local files".
Click on "Browse local files..." to open the game's directory.

Now, what I did next was to install the "Games for windows live marketplace"- App, which should automatically install the xlive.dll into your system32, and after a PC restart I was actually able to start the game. By the way, don't even bother trusting most of these people who upload their xlive.dll to share it, unless it's an actual administrator or something.

This is the setup I've used for GFWL
http://download.microsoft.com/download/E/6/1/E61EE391-8B89-425D-A80A-614A44FD3345/gfwlivesetup.exe

However, if you don't trust random dudes posting links like me, you can instead just google
"Games for Windows Live download" and download it from the official microsoft website.
That should fix the problem with the xlive.dll missing. If not, try asking a friend or someone else to send you their xlive.dll or download it from one of those fancy .dll sharing websites I don't trust because I have a huge trust issue (send help D:).
If you do get the xlive.dll from someone, put it into your system32 folder.

NOW THAT THE GAME IS FINALLY STARTING....

We need to get Games for windows Live running if we want to play online, heh.
Took me 2 hours.
The problem is, I had an issue with GFWL in GTA IV once where I couldn't sign in.
It would just permanently say "Loggin in - Please Wait". Sounds familiar? No? ok.
Now, I opened up the GFWL overlay by pressing the home key and logged into my account.
Though, suddenly it's just saying "Please wait" the whole time. Believe it or not, I just had to wait for like 10 minutes for it to finally log me in.

If you have any login problems, there's alot of useful threads for login issues everywhere and they usually work for everyone.

Games for windows Live then asked me for a key. You can easily find it if you open the Steam Overlay or if you navigate to your Library, click on Lost Planet 2 and if you look to the right side of the window, you should see a button saying "CD Key".
Copy it and paste it or just type it in, your choice.

If it works, it should now ask you if you want to install the update, you then click yes.
You'll have to end the game after you do. An installer will then open, install the update and then you can start the game again if it doesn't do it automatically.
I don't know if this same thing will happen to you, but I had to install freaking 4 updates and restart the game 4 times, but it worked in the end.

Now, that's everything I've done to get the game working for myself.
If it works for you and you now want to play with a friend, simply go to the campaign mode, create a match and invite them over Games for windows Live overlay.
Also be sure to add them before that obviously.
Since the game's VoIP is as horrible as EDF's Voice Chat, if you don't want to be heard by other players, you can simply change that if you go into your GFWL Overlay and then click on Settings. You should be able to disable your microphone.

That's it really, if there's anything else I can help with, I don't mind doing some research.
Hope you'll get the game working, since it's a freaking good game. Take care!

That's a neat guide, but you never did get the 0x80004005 error when you said "Yes" to update, right? Cause that's the part that I'm stuck at. No installer pops up or anything of the sort, the progression bar appears for a second then I just get the "cannot update, check your internet connection" message.

Have you tried completely reinstalling Games for Windows Live?
I'd recommend you to try that if you haven't already and maybe even see if there's a way to clean the registry of any leftovers or maybe even the GFWL Cache. Also I've heard of several Router/Ports issues as well, though I never changed anything on my routers settings.

Yeah, I've even been rebooting after each un/install because that's what made possible to log in to GFWL in the first place. Even going so far as to look for remaining files in system32/64.
Maybe I'm getting one thing wrong, but just to be sure: After I've updated GFWL (which is called Marketplace now) outside the game, it shouldn't even tell me that I need to update it, right? I find this weird because I've even tried to copy the supposed GFWL files just for Lost Planet 2 and still asks me everytime for that, and it always gives me the same "no internect connection" error.

♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ this is such a nightmare.
