I thought Dante was Nero's dad
From never playing the game before and seeing the game arts that's what I thought

Actually, Dante is Nero's uncle. His dad is Dante's brother Vergil.

Most people think Vergil is Neros Dad but I actually think Nero is Vergil. Neros arm, possible damaged memory and the possiblity that Vergil reverted to his younger self could all be explained as the effects that Mundus had on Vergil in DMC1. It also stands to reason that if Yamato and Vergil are bound, the Order would need to have both. There are several other hints such as Berials comment on Nero being like 'him', the fact that Dante seems to know what Nero is and is initally worried about him keeping Yamato, and Nero fights with his left hand but is shown to be using his right when fighting with Yamato in cut scenes. Another possible hint is that in the jackpot scene in DMC3 Vergil shoots with his left hand (but Nero's left handed fighting is probably due to his arm and not related to this). Finally, on the very last hit Nero uses on Sanctus (although I had devil trigger active at the time), Nero actually says 'Jackpot'.
