Make sure to stay under full HP by feeding Veles to maximize gains from food healing. Use items with knockdown effects to feed Veles in combat. Avoid goblin patrols, since they don't let you use Veles and force you to sacrifice HP.
Once you've acquired the helmet and enough food/potions you can drop below 50 HP by feeding Veles, continue feeding and healing until he's almost full. Don't forget to heal to full and equip best combat items before giving Veles the last HP needed to complete the objective - completing the objective sends you into final combat.
There's another armor that has the same mechanic but I forget which.
You're thinking of Blackguard's Platemail[hand-of-fate-2.wikia.com].
That's the one.
