Do I need to play HoF 1?
To keep up with the story in this one?

Not really. The story is played out mostly through the cards themselves.

HoF2 takes place 100 yrs later so it's a different story, characters, etc... only the Dealer is back and he kinda tells you the story of the first HoF. However the first game is worth playing if you like this game though :steamhappy:

That's not really correct. This game continues the story of the first game.
But I agree with you that the first game is always worth a play by everyone!

You don’t NEED to play the first game to understand the story, it will, in my opinion, make the story more enjoyable, and will probably also be easier to go from HoF1 to hoF2 more manageable than the other way around just due to all the very nice changes made.

Agreed. If you enjoy this game, you'd enjoy HoF 1, but it'd be easier to do 1 into 2 due to the quality of life improvements you'll miss going the other way around.

Not really, it refers back to the first game, but it is a different story, with different characters. The character from the original is only refered to in the past tense now :steamfacepalm:
