How does one use the keyboard for Rebel Assault 1? It looks as though there's no support for it.
I finished both Rebel Assaults back in the day, but those flying levels are not fun at all (because of those horrid controls).
The main problem with this game is the hitbox. On your screen it looks like you cleared an obstacle, but according to the game you hit it. And this is because all of the movement is done through FMV's rather than actual 3d terrain.
So your ship isn't actually flying through a Beggar's canyon environment. Instead, your ship is composited on top of a Beggar's canyon VIDEO. So now the hit detection is based on where the artists placed the hit detection markers.
Even if you clear the obstacle on your screen, if the artist made a mistake and let the hit range linger too long, you can still get hit.
This is most apparent in Rebel Assault 2 during the hardest stage of the game which is the Tie Fighter flying through the canyon.
Still, it's definitely possible to beat this game with the mouse, but it's hard because this game isn't in an actual 3d environment.
