its been some time since i read the first two books but if i remember correctly, the dwenda, kiriath and humans of today all have the same ancestors.
over a long period of time they evolved in different directions and eventually left(except for the humans). and now some of them are back.
i would say that the kiriath have changed so much over time, that they can be viewed as alien. the same is of course true for the dwenda.
