I didn't believe it myself until I tried. It's true. Only "Company of Heroes Legacy Edition" works with network games.
"Company of Heroes Legacy Edition", which was "Company of Heroes" works the same as it did before the name change. Run the game, it asks for disc, insert the disc, work. Never had to sign into Relic's old system.
Tried skirmish and campaign, both worked. Tried LAN, worked. Multiplayer (not LAN) doesn't work, which is expected and for that you need to use "Company of Heroes" (old CoH New Steam Version).
All in all, just name changed. What you used CoH New Steam Version (was over 2.7) for, you use CoH now. What you used CoH before (version 2.602 iirc), you use CoH legacy Edition.
its nothing more than an underhanded money grab. appaulingly deceptive and the tactic of choice used by the scummiest execs/devs. Reminds me of that Dino game that gets a new name many times a year.
And CoH is still one of the best RTS games so why not? It's so good even 11 years old, let it have more players.
That's exactly why we did it :)
The Steam pages descriptions were also tweaked for clarity[imgur.com] - but it took us a couple of days. Sorry about that. Try clearing your browser cache if you don't see them now, however.
Going forward, the "Company of Heroes" app - formerly called "Company of Heroes (New Steam Version)" - is the one you should use if you want to play online and enjoy the Steam Workshop maps.
We did not want to remove the Legacy Edition altogether because:
PS: sorry for the late answer; last couple of weeks have been a bit busy!
