Rogue Leader can be brutal. Especially the Millenium Falcon Turret missions.
Small, Erratic Enemies + Time Limit + Twitchy Controls + An Accuracy Stat + NO RETICLE
Rebel Strike was even worse, though it didn't help that half of that game was just awful.
For Gold Medal time, you have time for one thing on the side real quick (I go for the three droids and two AT-STs on the right from the spawn), then blast the turrets at Prison 1, and go straight for the generator. Make a pass on everything over there, blow up the generator, and assuming the shuttle survives, you should finish the mission in Gold time.
for 40% accuracy, focus your lasers on AT-STs, turrets, and buildings. Use your lock-on missiles to shoot down the TIEs attacking the shuttle (Or on stray TIEs that roam the level). You can suicide into a turret or AT-ST if you need a refill on missiles.
My Gold run on this misison killed 113 enemies. Most notably, I exterminated those little Stormtroopers; very few of them survived the wrath of my X-wing.
Fest Gold, meanwhile is just a complete screw job. You'll find out in the first 3 minutes whether you have a Gold run going or if you have to restart the misison, because if any of the AT-PTs die, you lose Gold instantly. Quit to menu instead of aborting the mission, you're going to want to have three lives (As I usually get shot down once).
Fest is mostly about practice, take out the AT-ATs, then go for the tanks. As soon as the bombers spawn, take them out immediately (The bombs kill the AT-PTs in one hit). Once you've cleared the tanks abd bombers, the AT-PTs are safe. Blow up everything by the shield generator as you pass by, then go for the area by where the At-PTs began and blast stuff there too. Then finish up with the bonus and the research facility.
I finished this gold in 6:26, so you only really have time for 1 pass on the generator and AT-AT, then maybe two passes on the facility.
As for Death Star, it seems to be mostly about enemies destroyed and making the time limit. oming down the first stretch, Blast turrets with your lasers and use all your missiles to lock onto stray TIEs. Once you reach the first turn, close your S-foils and speed through the rest of the mission until you get the cutscene, then as you zip down the home stretch blast all the turrets, then fire a missile down the shaft to win.
To make the time limit, ALWAYS be at full throttle or have the S-foils closed. Weave around as you fly through the trench. and turret lasers will be less likely to shoot you down.
Don't worry about burning all your missiles on TIEs - you can sacrifice a life (Preferably by smacking yourself into one of the turrets at a turn) and still make it to the end in time.(Of course, keep in mind, you need at least one missile to finish the level, otherwise, you'll have no choice but to suicide yourself)
When I Golded Trench Run, I actually finished in a swift 2:27 and 31 kills (Including one suicide into a turret), so there was still some time to spare.
Accuracy includes everything as far as I can tell. If you want to cheese 100% accuracy, just plink a few blaster whots into one of the buildings or the numerous missile turrets (They count as accuracy). Ignore the TIE fighters flying around if you're in a bomber, you're too slow to be chasing them down, and the missile turrets are far deadlier to a bomber.
If you need help with enemies killed, several waves of stormtroppers will spawn from a few buildings after they're destroyed. Drop a well placed bomb or two on the group and rack up a ton of easy kills.
For time, you'll just have to know wherre to go, and keep your foot on the gas. If you raid the space port first, after exiting the area make a sharp U-turn in the canyon at the first intersection, that will take you to the satellite center.
Oh, right, the volcano one. That mission is just plain HARD to get a Gold on in a Y-Wing. You're basically a sitting duck in a giant circle arena with all those missile turrets. It's one of the hardest Gold medals in the game along with Fest and Death Star/Canyon/Mission 15's
The same basic concept applies. Plink your lasers into the turrets and bomb everything else on the ground that you can. Buildings count as enemy kills, and you'll have to destroy almost all of them on the floor of the volcano to qualify. Yes, you can bomb the AT-STs as well. Pretty sure with Advanced Bombs, that they willl one-shot an AT-ST. Ignore the TIE fighters, they aren't worth your time.
That mission is hell thuogh, I did get Gold with a Y-wing, on that run I got shot down twice and finished with seconds to spare. I aim for the first life to bomb everything on the left (And try to survive until I get to the facility in the back), then mop most of the rest up with life 2. Last life, just go for the objective and blow up the reactor.
For lulz, you can also just crash your ship into a turret if you're in red health or if you run out of bombs. You need more than one life's worth of bombs in order to destroy enough stuff for Gold.
I actually did write up a text-only guide for the game a while back, but never got around to posting it. A bunch of other things and IRL got in the way.
Yeah, the Naboo starfighter is unlocked, I believe if you get Silver or more in all missions, I forget. I know all ships are unlocked if you Gold all missions.
The V-wing is just overpowered, yes. Homing Cluster missiles? Say goodbye to that entire squadron of TIE fighters. Tough target? Turbo Lasers!
As for buildings, turrets, and stuff, if you play the game enough, you begin to learn exactly how much firepower it takes to destroy targets. Also, you were using first person for all missions? No wonder why you were having trouble... I used third person for every mission xD
At least it wasnt like on Rogue Squadron 3: Rebel Strike as i got my last Gold Medal (Had also lots of ACE Medals) and RIGHT in the moment i achieved it and it was about to save on memory card i get this message: "Your Memory Card Data has been corrupted and needs to be deleted" "Wait what? No?! Not at all?" POOF ........... all Data and work of Years gone within just a few seconds forever........ including a nice Coop Record as well with killing a Star Destroyer within 19 Seconds and recieving ACE for it in Coop....
Took me about half an hour while sitting there repeating the words "its... its gone.... just... gone.... work of year, gone....."
GLAD this doesnt happen now on the PC version (since no memory card)
I hope everyone out there will get all the Gold Medals somewhen in time as well. Feels good :)
Holy WHAT?! I had no idea that sequels to Rogue Squadron were ever made. I just went on YouTube to check them out. WOW! They look amazing!
Steam, oh Steam.... work your magic and make these games available to us! I know we are not worthy, but let's make it happen!
Back on the N64, I had gotten all the medals in Rogue Squadron. I'd forgotten how much I dislike the "Fest" level. That bastid is the only thing standing in my way to unlock the bonus levels. I still need a few other Golds, but Fest is killing me.
While I can't swear to it, I think the more "gold" medals you have in the earlier levels, the harder the later levels are. With that in mind, I've created several different pilot games and have been experimenting with it. So far, the two hardest ones are Fest and Sullest. I keep missing the Gold by one stat. Either can't get enough friendly saves, or time runs out. I missed getting Gold on Sullest yesterday by 3 seconds and ONE BLOODY KILL!
As much as I love this game, that kinda thing is frustrating as Hell!
Once I get the Gold in those two levels, THEN I'll go back and get them in the earlier ones.
Accuracy is a bear on Sullest. There are several points where you can "miss" a target, but destroy 5-6 things. It's a trade off, you get extra kills, but lose accuracy. I'm going to have a go on that mo-hugger again today.
I am one with the Force, the Force is with me.
