I have a similar problem. After the launcher the screen is black for aprox 5-8 seconds, then comes up with a dialouge box saying "Could not initialize HAL" and then the game closes.

Here are some of the things, both by themselves and combined, I have tried with no success:
Run as admin - HAL error
Run 256 colors - HAL error
Run in 640x480 - HAL error
Run in compatibility mode for XP, 2000 or 98: Asks for game CD Rom, WTF?

You can emulate a cd drive and then download a torrent of the cd rom and use that as the disc. Wouldn't consider that remotely illegal since you own the game.
