Camera bug and control with mouse and keyboard?
Hello everyone,
I tried this game after buying it from the store. The camera seems to veer off further away after i speed up, to the point that I cannot see my ship at all. How can I fix this? Also, the game is janky AF with my mouse, Is this just an issue with the age of the game, being designed before optical mice were a thing? would it be wise to just buy a 360 or Xbox controller to solve this issue? As for the camera, should i just hot F1 during the start of the level, as others have stated? I want to play the game, and the game seems to run fine otherwise, but it is hard to control as stated. Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you,
Emerson Schwarz

Hi, the game works very fine with 360 controller, it is impossible to enjoy it at full with mouse and keyboard in my opinion so buying a controller would be very wise.
The camera bug is annoying, but if you assign a key on the controller to cycle the camera you can sort it out in few seconds when it happens.

Is this the F1 key I saw people talking about? And is there a trick to getting the game to recognize a modern gamepad?

No trick, the game was designed to be compatible with a joystick.
Yes F1 is one of the camera views, you can check the game manual here:

Many thanks,
I will have to give this game another go after I buy a controller or joystick.
Thank you. Hopefully, I will be able to find this thread again after I get one, so I can report on if this was successful!

I use a XBOX360 Controller and the view does fly-off to the distance at times when it is not expected like other times. I think it is a programing issue inherent in the game.

I've often wished someone would take this game and remake it from the original programming with any issues resolved and the game polished. One example is the Imperial Walker grappling hook battle...the controls are super wonky.

I actually use the Brawler 64 controller from Retro Fighters, think xbox controller with the button layout similar to the n64 controller except the trigger buttons are the z button. Except for not being able to map the triggers it's the best controller for the game in my opinion. I suggest making the c up button thrust and c down boost.

I am sorry if this is a necro post, but I thought I would provide an update. I decided to buy a Wired Xbox one style controller that plugs in via USB cable. It seems to have worked out the control issues, though the camera bug can only be solved by switching the camera until it is directly behind the ship. Not ideal, but this game is older than dirt, and I doubt that Steam or Disney care enough to debug this game. Regardless, I hope this post doesn't become buried, so that any future gamer can see this thread, and find a solution to this problem. :steamhappy:

For the camera issue, I always just switch it to the close-up view (some people prefer cockpit view) and play it that way. When I cycle it back to the normal view, it just messes up again, so I don't use that.
