Controller?
Is there a way to get an xbox one controller to work with this? If not is there any that are compatible with this game? For me it is unplayable with a keyboard and mouse, I really want to play this cause I remember playing this as a little 8 year old around the time when TPM came out and I loved it.

I am having no problem running it with my PDP AFterglow wireless Xbox One controller and my Xbox One Design lab controller.

Edit: What issue do you have?

From the Launcher, Hardware Configuration, Joystick Options, make sure the controller you want to use is set in the drop-down menu.
If in doubt, hit Calibrate Joystick, which should open Windows' Game Controllers control panel. Go to Advanced... and set the controller as your preferred device.
Once in game, go to Settings, Joystick, and bind your controls as desired.
Ctrl+J while in game will inactivate/reactivate joystick control.

I tried the above, but I am still running into issues. I am using a wireless XBox 1 controller. First, when I am in the game menu and go to configure the "joystick", I can get it to designate the axes of my left stick. However, in the assignment blocks for weapons, thrust, breaks, etc., the game only recognizes the "A" button. None of my other controller buttons register when I press them to assign them. Thus, I thought that I needed to press "A", as in the stick configuration, so as to select the block before pressing a different button to assign. Whe I tried this, it just asks if I'm sure I want to assign "A" because it is already assigned. So, I resigned myself to the idea that I can only have one button and the left stick. I thus assigned the "A" button to the main weapon and attempted to play the game. This is when my second issue arose, namely, that the controller still did not work in-game, even though I was able to use the controller to navigate the menues. I moved the stick to move the X-Wing, but nothing happened. I pressed "A" to fire, and again nothing happened. Then I tried the keyboard, just to see if the game would respond to it, and this allowed me to move my ship.

OK, I was able to get the controller to work using "Ctrl+J" while in-game. However, I am still unable to assign any more of the controller aside from the left stick and the "A" button. Is there a way to assign the other buttons?

I was having the same problem, arbitrarily hit "default" on the side and it filled in all the buttons with controls, worked in game finally. Hope this helps!

I have done all of this, and still no dice. The thing will not let me bind anything and just shows "Button 1" and will not let me do a single thing.

I have also done this, and no dice.

GOG version + Joy2Key + Riva_Turner_statistic_server (to avoid game freeze at launch)
And use you gamepad as a keyboard after you bind all the buttons into Joy2key.

Super late to the thread, but if anybody is still having this issue the easiest solution I found was to set the Compatibility Settings for the program under properties to Windows98/ ME. Didn't have to mess with Joy2Key at all. Once in game, go to settings and Joystick controls, hit default, and it should auto populate the control settings for anybody having issues with the always "Button 1" issue.

Ctrl J seems to only start activating blasters and turning for me. This is quite infuriating

I tried all kinds of things. Compatibility settings, none of which worked. Win98/ME compatibility just crashed the configuration tool. Win XP SP2/3 did nothing. I even tried disabling Steam Input. (which is still a good idea) Nothing made my XBOX One controller plugged in via USB work in this game. The hardware configuration tool saw it was there and I had it set to active. The game even had the buttons already mapped out, but none of them worked. Messing with in game settings did nothing. Finally, I unplugged my XBOX One controller and tried an XBOX 360 controller. The hardware configuration tool didn't even "see" the XBOX 360 controller, but it works in the game with no issues. I managed to change some button assignments and I did the first mission with no issues. It just worked. So, it seems this game might be picky about certain controllers.

Sorry to hear you are all having the same problem as me. I tried a lot of this and none worked but i have SOLUTION!!!

Download Project 64 and then download the Rogue Squadron ROM.
I know we wanted it to work on here or GOG but it basically just doesn't and some got lucky so good for them.
I just started playing this on project 64 and took me maybe 5 mins to setup. Sorry i don't have a better answer friends but it makes me smile and i get my childhood again lol.
