I have not played in a very long time (probably years) and have just had 2 different games effectively ruined because an AI opponent randomly ups and surrenders out of nowhere, even before having any direct contact with them... Somehow, they even gave over their planets when I had already turned this off the first time... Is this a known issue, and how do I prevent this short of disabling surrender entirely?...

Are they just simply bonus HP versus the matching weapon type, or is defense mechanic more elaborate? Like reducing incoming damage by defence margins?

Or have there been and awful lot of mini up dates in the last few months?
