Where to enter , to paste the serial number in order to play ?

If you got the game via Steam there's no serial number you need to input. Only serial number I ever encountered was from the game disk way back when.

If you're saying you have an old game disk serial number and are hoping to use it on the Steam version it won't work, you'll need to purchase the game via Steam.

actually, it does require a cd-key. Having gotten it on Steam, when installed steam gave a message; "this is your cd-key, to enter when the game asks for it." The game starts and goes to the main menu without asking for it, then as soon as you click play, it gives error message 'invalid cd-key'

If that's your case then I'd look into the files and find where the key is listed and just put it there and then try to start it up.
