I had the same Import problem; I had been playing TQ:IT, AE came out and I couldn't import my character. This is what worked for me.
First in the AE game: Create a new character, doesn't really matter what as you won't play him. Mine I called 'Bob'. Launch Bob so you enter the game in Helios. Than exit the game.
Now try to import your old characters. The best anyone could figure out was you needed to create a save game file in the AE version in order to import characters into it. Trying to just copy the old IT file over wouldn't work (probably because of coding differences).
Once you get your characters imported Bob can be deleted as he's served his purpose.
