Hero selection

Hi I just started playing and after completing the prologue the game is asking me to select a hero and I'm not sure at all what it's for does it matter who I chose?

If you played the first game selecting one of your characters from it will give you that characters moves and some tp medals. If you didn't play the first game then all it really affects are a few cutscenes.
