Well in a lot of cases, depending on how you customize them, they can sometimes fight better, even as AI, than the standard roster type.
I've put this to the test and most of my customized partners far outperform their standard roster AI's in fights.
They patched that in XV1 quite at the end in, where AI got the abilty to transform.
I miss that in XV2 quite a lot - also the fact that you don't keep your transformation at the end scene and between cutscenes is disapointing too.
