The short version is: use Steam's built-in controller support or use DS4Windows to emulate an Xbox 360 gamepad with it.
Explaining why this happens will take a little bit of background, so bear with me.
Windows has two main APIs through which a game can read inputs.
One is the older one, DirectInput, and most every kind of device is supported through DirectInput. The PS4 gamepad, when connected to Windows, communicates solely through this API. The downside is that the buttons are numbered (as you see here) and the D-pad may act as a hat switch or as individual buttons. There are so many different kinds of devices that are supported through DirectInput that the game can't make assumptions about which button is which or what they're named.
The other is a newer one, XInput, and basically the only thing that can be read through XInput is the Xbox 360 gamepad. That gamepad also responds to DirectInput, so games that don't use XInput can still support it, but XInput basically requires a 360 controller.
If you convince the game to talk to your gamepad via XInput, it will show (Xbox 360) buttons and will understand the d-pad. The way we do this is by emulating a 360 gamepad.
The way I do it is with DS4Windows, specifically this fork of it which is still under active development: https://github.com/Ryochan7/DS4Windows - It's important to enable the "Hide DS4 controller" option, because if you *don't*, the PS4 gamepad will show up in Windows twice: once as itself (DirectInput-only) and once as an Xbox 360 gamepad (emulated). Turn on that option, and the program hides the regular gamepad, leaving only the emulated 360 one for games to talk to.
I am told that Steam itself can do something similar. Go into settings > controller > General Controller Settings and enable PS4 Controller support. Unfortunately, I have very little experience with this method and cannot really help you set it up.
Well my friend has the buttons shown in game, AND in gtav, so there is a way, and its not a mod. So im confused as FU**.

Can I use the ps4 button prompt mod without getting banned? Games these days are getting more strict with what you can modify and what you can't. And btw i've known about ds4 for SOME time now, and have used it, i am just curious as to how my friend can just from fresh, plug in his ps4 controller, no ds4, no input mappers, no mods, and just have ps4 button prompts, but it seems hes like the only one in the world to get it i guess.
EDIT ill check with a friend on this too
By what means has he connected the gamepad to his PC? Is he using the Sony wireless adapter, perhaps?
No he has connected the ps4 controller through his phone charger, literally nothing else, and he just has the button prompts on the pc version, i can literally have him upload a video launching tha game if you really are that skeptical about it.
Trust me, we've tried everything, i uninstalled my controller drivers and reinstalled them by plugging in the ps4 controller, downloaded random things my friend had, games he had, so on so forth. Nothing makes mine works like his. It's really stupid, i actually have 2 friends that have this as well, they can literally from a fresh start, plug in their ps4 controller and just have ps4 controller support and button prompts on many games, including this one. Well, fucc it, i like the xbone controllers as well, and im getting the one x. So tbh ill probably just live with the ps4 controller to xbox buton prompts and deal with it. Most of the reason I even care is that now that i know you CAN indeed have the button prompts in alot of games, without mods, it'd be a good thing if i could figure out how. Trust me he himself doesn't even know, the only reason i even found out he had the ps4 button prompts was because i asked. He thought them popping up was normal, hence why i just found out. So i don't think personally theres anything different between mine and his pc besides specs. So im confused, he's confused, and this thread is probably just confusing more people lol.
The difference is the version of your own / your friends' PS4 controllers.
XV2 supports the first-gen Dual Shock 4 controllers (I use one; no mods; PS4 icons are shown; controls work perfectly fine both wired or via Bluetooth). Sony updated their Dual Shock 4 a while ago though and stsrted shipping PS4 with that newer version.
XV2 has problems getting them to work properly, so using 3rd-party programs like Input Mapper might be necessary to play XV2 with a newer DS4. And as it was said, there are mods for the icons, although I don't get why anyone would think they need them xD
