You purchased a license of Substance Painter 2. You will get updates for free up to September 30, 2017.
After October 1, 2017, you will be able to purchase 12 months maintenance on our website for $75.
Just so we are clear. Becasue if I understand this right I am not sure why anyone is upset
If a SP2 owners sees no reason to pay 75 this Sept they can wait toll Sep 2018 pay 75 and get the newer version plus the stuff they missed from the 2017 release?
Also is this new method alos working with SD? If that is the case do I need to upgrade to SD6 before the new system get into place of can I stay with SD5
This is how it works. You can wait whenever you want before purchasing the maintenance.
It will be the case with Substance Designer as well, and you will be able to do it with SD5 (as you can do it with SP1).

Ok was thinking I was missing something. This seems like a much better deal than the old system. Not sure why some would complain
You are incredibly patient ! ... ;-)
From what I understand of this mess is that the developer is looking for 75$ a year (6.25$/mth) per software for update/upgrade on existing licenses.
So, if you own both SD and SP that's 150$ per year. (Not sure what they're doing with B2M, that has't been mentioned here yet but if it's 75$ per year, then you're looking at 225$ per year (or 18.75$/mth if you budget for the next payment period))
and now the Live Subscription looks a little more tempting..
But the Substance Live model makes no sense for hobbiests (unless they do own the 3 products).
Personally, I don't download enough resourses from the library to justify that kind of expense and I only have SP right now. But, for corporations that use the service and software on a daily basis and have revenue flowing in well thats a different story I guess.
All I can say on this is that these type of subscription models are just an out for developers to dilly dally on supporting flawed software and still reap revenue while they fiddle fart around providing "new or repaired" updates only to those that subscribe. AFAIC, they're driving the hobbiest away from their product by not providing proper support and charging a yearly fee to get it.
In gereral, the hobbiest stays away from these type of purchasing models like they are a plague. We just can't afford them.
"Sorry Honey, no food or heat for the kids this month. I have to pay the rent, hydro, phone, you want your cable TV and I have to pay all my software subscriptions."
I roughly have the same argument, though you do keep SP2 but you get completely dropped from the system if you don't pay the 75$. So whats this mean for you? Well if you are like me and get constant crashing and have tried everything to fix this but nothing works and have to wait for a patch for it. You lose the chance of getting said patch that fixes the crashing issue.
Bug fixing and performance patching should be mandatory no matter what. You shouldn't have to pay 75$ just to get a update that actually makes the program work again, completely absurd if you ask me.
But what is Substance Live? Its very confusing. I dont want to spend 160€ on SP and then spend another 75€/$ to keep my software updated... Its very unclear.
No substance live there is no paypment above the 20 a month. It all goes toward you software payoff
There are 2 models, depending on your needs:
1) Substance for $19.90 per month
This is a rental model. For this price, you can use all the software and 30 dl on Substance Source. You can stop whenever you want, no engagement.
One perk is that we give you the possibility to own a license of the software when you want to cancel, if for example you want to still be able to edit your files, etc.
This option is available for $49 (for all the software), after 12 months.
So it's $19.90 per month, and if after 1 year you want to cancel, you have the possibility to purchase licenses for $49.
2) Purchase perpetual licenses
You can purchase a perpetual license of the software for $149. This includes 12 months of maintenance/new builds if you purchase it on the website.
If you purchase it on Steam, it will give you new builds up to September 30, 2017.
Once your maintenance is over, you can at any moment purchase a new maintenance of 12 months for $75 per software to get all the new builds.
Chosing one or the other option depends on your needs, and wether you already have a license or not:
If you don't have any license:
- $19.90 per month seems the best approach. After 1 year you can stop and get licenses for $49, and you would have had 360 downloads on Substance Source. So $289 in total.
- if you purchase the software separately, it would cost $300, and you won't have access to Substance Source.
If you already have Substance Painter and Substance Designer:
- it would be $150 to get new updates for 1 year
- or $180 with the monthly payments (6 * $9.95 then 6*19.90), and access to Substance Source
If you are interested in only one software and already have a license, then purchasing a 12 months maintenance for $75 will probably be the best scenario for you.
Cheers,
