First Person Tennis - The Real Tennis Simulator

I can't get any forehand right, although my backhand is fine
I play tennis IRL and I know how to fore/backhand properly, but my forehands in this game can't even get above the net. My backhand is fine, the problem is the forehand.

Am I the problem? Maybe some setting?

Arcade or Simulation mode?

Please check your framerate pressing "F" on your keyboard during a match. You will see a number on your virtual hand. It must be >88.

FPS is always on 89-90.

My problem was on simulation mode. When I switched to arcade my forehands were fine. What can I be doing wrong?

I don’t know how is your forehand, maybe you put too much topspin. Try to hit more flat.

Arcade mode will erm..hmm. It kind of...tollerates your mistakes. Yea, that's it:steamhappy:

The chasm between Arcade and Sim mode is quite big in this game (imo) And that is the thing. In Sim mode, you have to just play better than you do in Arcade. A lot!

I still have trouble with over hitting my backhands, I can clear the net fine but sometimes...a (REALLY) lot!! They just go at 200 mph with next to no effort and kill a Ball Boy/Girl/Spectator :steamhappy:

I really have to think about my backhand in Sim mode, pretty fun though and I really should play more...It's a great game.

Yea i think i've noticed the same thing as Musa. I also play tennis regularly IRL as well and have to say my forehand topspin kind of just drops into the net. I feel like i'm accelerating and giving it the same spin as i do in real life and i can't seem to get a shot in unless i really tone down and almost hit all my shots flat or even doing some forehand slices. Backhand is not too bad would be nice to maybe have a two handed backhand in the future :) Otherwise i've just downloaded the game it its not too shabby :)

You can play a two handed backhand right now if you want.

I have constant isues overshooting the ball outside the court on simulation, but I am no Tennis player in real life, so I take it I would probably have a simular result on a real court. The challenge here is to forget that it is a game, and really do nice swings instead of just bashing the ball, then results go nowhere. But when I really focus on the correct swings and times, it all works fine, testament to the good physics and realism of this game I think. That is what simulation should be.

Maybe one more thing; porting to the net feels like cheating and a mechanic to "always win", or am I missing something and experienced Tennis players feel the timing us rather realistic?

There should be some sort of delay to simulate the travel to the net, but any visual delay would cause nausea instantaneously. Maybe a 1.5 second timer before you press the port butten or something?

Yes, if you are not a regular tennis player is absolutely normal that you tend to hit the ball higher.
And yes, teleporting to the net is a bit like cheating and it will not used in multiplayer mode for sure. I'm not sure that a timer is the best way because the player may have the feeling that the button doesn't work.

What about a hybrid "third-person/teleport" mode? So when you press the stick you see your player run out in front of you while your view remains stationary. And when you release the stick your view teleports to the player's location.

Some VR games use this as an option, such as From Other Suns.

Thank you for your suggestion, i will look into it!

I have the same issue with forehands. I use an extreme western grip IRL so that may be why. (rotate the racket face forward so it tilts down and use a lot of topspin) I came here hoping you might add that as a setting/ detect that. Can connect a lot better in Simulation mode with forehands but the control is definitely delicate/touchy. Using a flat swing helps a lot but that's not how I swing. In Arcade mode I often just whiff on the ball completly on forehands. Backhands feel great and control is also great. My backhand grip and swing is traditional. Anyways, very cool game just hoping for some little adjustments. Thanks.

Could you describe what happens exactly when you hit a forehand?

If I use my regular swing (for a western grip) I will often just miss the ball since the racket-head angle is basically 90 degrees off. When I do make contact the ball usually goes towards the bottom of the net. I have to modify my swing to make consistant contact with the ball for forehands. Here's a video describing a western grip and how the swing differs from a traditional continental grip:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_2In06DTI9U

What would be ideal is if there was a setting for the forehand racket-face angle. With this I could change the angle so when I hit a forehand the angle of the racket-face is rotated about -90 degrees. Some people use a semi-western grip so they would probably prefer around -45 degrees.

The backhand would not use this rotation. IRL I rotate the grip depending on if it's a forehand or backhand. You would have to change the rotation angle in the software depending on if it's a forehand or backhand.

Thanks for your interest in this issue.

I’m a tennis pro too so i know what you mean. What device do you have? If you have an HTC Vive controller or a Vive Racket or a Vive Tracker on a real racket you can use it like a real grip and rotate it in your hand. The problem is if you have an Oculus Touch because you cannot change the grip with it. I can try to add an option to rotate the position of the racket in game so you can match it with your forehand grip but you will have the same problem when you hit a backhand or a volley because you have to rotate the grip again, and with an oculus touch you cannot do it.
