They tried to fix it but it's still a mess.
If you do want to do ezbuild, it's recommended to start a ship from scratch and stay there until you finish it, in one session.
Alternatively ALL ezbuild modules are now available in the ship designer, via a download from Icarus project, you just need to click the weld icon after placing them.
Note, you can get 10 free labourers by repeating the repair tutorial, which itself is buggy.
Don't worry about messing your ship up - having ezbuild eat your ship is a rite of passage in this game :)
Go to settings -> tutorial and redo "repair job" to get another laborer ship. You can use it in easy build mode again if you want to. I played around with easy build mode for a bit after early access launch and even built working ship from scratch, and then I went to ship designer and never used EBM again. From trial and error I learnt that you should never remove modules from the middle and never modify that ship outside EBM unless you don't want to use EBM again. If you need to modify the middle of the ship then remove all modules one by one from one end of the ship first.
