Umm, did all my people die while I was not playing?

Just started the game today, played a bit, then turned the game off. Went back to it later and a giant skull and crossbones was flashing and none of my people were on the screen. Yet, I was able to move forward on the map and found more scrap. What's going on?

It could be a problem with the saves, can you describe how many people you had, on which stage you were?

First stage and I have 4 people. It was weird because my screen was empty of people but I was able to move forward on the map. It's fine now because I started a new game, but I was a bit confused. I assumed a glitch. Or that the game runs when I am not playing :P
