not really. the game is pretty generous with giving out new players with a bunch of tickets or decks to roll on new cards. though you need to grind on the coins to get new decks when you've run of those tickers. so spending is more of collecting the cards than actually spending the money to win. and you can still get legendary cards with the tickets that the game gave you, so there's no need to worry about losing to people who spent countless amount of money on this game.

It is pay to win, absolutely, without a doubt.

I'm coming back after having quit the Eternal Awakening expansion, right as the Renascent Chronicles expansion launched. I'm only just getting to play the Machina Portalcraft deck I've made.

This is after:
The 10 complementary new expansion free pack tickets.
The new expansion daily login for 8 days for 8 pack tickets total.
The entire "Treasure Trove of Rupees" event's free tickets and rupees.
The entire daily 5 treasure chests from playing ranked event.
The free battle pass rewards up until this point.
The "Temporary Deck Ticket" they hand out at the beginning of the expansion (the cards it gives you expire once the next expansion comes about).
I had 20k vials to craft cards going into this expansion from before I quit.
I had enough gemstones to buy 3 "temporary" (honestly technically permanent, you're just not allowed to liquefy them) legendary cards.
The new story mode rewards I had not earned yet since I last quit.

I opened up a total of 62 Renascent Chronicles card packs and 62 Darkness Over Vellsar card packs, (funny coincidence that it just so happened to be the same amount for both) I had to use up all my vials, and I BARELY had enough to create this deck. And this is AFTER the Temporary Deck ticket helping me out on top of it. If I didn't have that, I would not be able to play this deck, I'd be short a few cards.

All of this effort for a Tier 1 deck that may not even stay Tier 1 once the mini-expansion comes out, or even exist in the meta or be vialbe once the next expansion comes. All of this effort for a deck that has at the bare minimum 2 to 3 months lifespan tops. If I want to try out the rest of the tier 1 decks, I can't, I don't have the cards or the vials to craft them. I have to pick which tier 1 deck I think will stay viable for the longest amount of time and that I'd have fun with because of my lack of money. I picked Machina Portalcraft because it lacked any Fortune's Hand cards in it (the next expansion that will rotate), so this deck COULD be viable for up to 6 months vs just 3.

The rest of this expansion will be spent stockpiling rupees for the mini-expansion/next expansion to hopefully have enough in game currency/get lucky enough to be able to build the next flavor of the month deck that's competitively viable.

I've played this game since launch. I quit after Rise of Bahamut, I came back for Verdant Conflict, I quit after Ultimate Colosseum, I came back for Storm Over Rivayle, I quit after Eternal Awakening.

Why so much quitting? Come next expansion, I don't have the money to build the next flavor of the month deck, or I don't like the meta. So I stop playing because the game isn't fun when you auto-lose 9/10 of your games just because you're running a welfare variant of a deck, or because the current meta is trash to play in. I have to wait for the next few expansions for there to be a 100% meta shift/have built up enough currency to finally go all in and create a new deck. During that downtime, I'm forced to play Unlimited, the cesspit variant of the game, but the only variant I can be competitively viable in 100% of the time. (Even if it's a complete 50/50 tossup game mode VS actual skill.) I enjoy Rotation much more, but I don't have the money to be able to enjoy Rotation outside of these short periods.

Why don't I just quit entirely then? This game is fun, it really is, I love it and I enjoy it a ton and I can't get this same feeling and joy that I do playing this game in other card games. The amount of analyzing I do, predictions, how I can tell exactly what cards a person will play on each of their turns multiple turns in advance and how I can counteract it or what I need to do to win, how hard it makes my brain work, etc. I love it. But it's an absolutely toxic relationship because of the previous factors I mentioned and it is not beginner or a F2P friendly game in the slightest. I still play because since I've played since the beginning of the game, I've built up enough of a foundation that allows me to bypass most of the F2P hump, and sometimes, rarely, I do enjoy playing Unlimited.

I hope and pray that come next expansion, I don't have to quit again and continue this cycle. I'm just not a point in my life where I can financially justify/have enough disposable income to spend on this game. No thanks to Covid shutting down my ability to do something about that for the past over a year. If I could spend money on this game, I would, and that'd be the end of it and I'd be happy, but I can't. Every "Treasure Trove of Rupees" event I hope and pray that I could be one of the lucky winners, even a second place prize, so that I'd never have to worry about this ever again. But of course, it's literally a lottery, and it'd be foolish to think I'd ever win something like that.

I don't want to turn people away from trying this amazing game, because it's really fun when you can actually play it at a high level, but this is the truth about it. It's not free, and it's not a "one time purchase" sort of game either. It's more akin to a much higher than average cost "subscription" based game, ~$60 plus per expansion, if that makes any sense.

If you've made it this far, thanks for reading. After a certain point, this post became more of a self reflection type of essay I could read back to myself, just to get all my feelings out on paper to make me feel better about my relationship with this game and my own life. I hope this helps other players decide whether to or not to play this game.

Beside, you can have fun not only by playing tier 1 deck, but rather by playing the deck you like with leader you like

You donating on games because you like it, like very, or feel that game is worth donation. Idk from where you got those numbers, but i stopped playing before FH abd resumed on DoV i havent played for around 8+ months and by liquefying extras got 100k vials, after that i spend them and got around 3k vials left. Now new expansion came and after all events i am sitting on ~80k.

Decks so far: Wolfraud forest, Roost dragon, Machina portal, not complete Rally sword, Aggro shadow, Wrath blood, Manaria rune (without Mileka), Rush dragon, not complete LW shadow, not complete Chaos rune, Jateland heaven, Rush heaven and probably i forgot something (trying to make new blood deck and aggro + otk forest, probably evo rune and finish rally sword rn)

Idk what you are talking about. Literally

Aight bro, no need to be antagonizing, just sharing my personal opinion. I'm glad you don't share the same problems as I do.

P2W aspect isn't even the worst about this game, it's that everybody and their grandma is running the same ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ decks even in casual because diversity is dead thanks to constant power creep and nobody cares about just having fun anymore. If you were to ask how is this related, it is for those who don't play Shadowverse every day, because they will miss out on a lot of packs and therefore, have to buy them for real money. So that alleged generosity is only for the hardcore crowd.
DarkZide Jul 18, 2021 @ 6:56pm
I don't think this is a P2W game. It certainly helps but it is not a P2W. As someone mentioned, paying is more for collecting leaders and sleeves etc. With that said - I have previously bought some cards now and then whenever I have felt GRATEFUL for the work Cygames done and when I wanted to reward the developers. But I haven't bought a single thing since I came back last month.

I came back pretty recently (Darkness over Vellsar) and I have played pretty consistently and I've been able to make several good decks for Unlimited and one really good one for Rotation. If you stick to Unlimited, you are going to have more cards available to make decks that can compete - but if you are completely new, I think you should focus on having fun and try to play fun decks in Unranked. There is also A LOT OF SINGLEPLAYER content you can play that has lots of rewards that is great if you are a beginner. Not just the campaign, but also Practice Mode gives you rewards if you bet the harder opponents.

And if you join a discord, you can quickly get 20 more packs from playing private games with other players.

Anyhow... Cygames are pretty good at always having some promotion or event taking place that makes it easier to earn rupies, tickets and packs. They recently gave everyone 100 packs (10 tickets worth 10 packs each) because they had their 5 year celebration and upon that a Treasure Trove-event and before that an extra singleplayer-mode were you could solve puzzles + grind for money. So I did all that and got lots of packs now.

Just keep playing and you will get there. However, sometimes the meta can be really boring and that is when I usually take a break from the game and return at a later date. Usually when a new expansion is coming - they usually give out a lot of packs when that happens as well.

♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥.
Tier 1 or 0 completely ruin the game. Interesting combo is getting harder and harder to success with recent patches.
There is no fun in it if you lose so much with non tier 0 and 1 deck
The game is getting more absurd than ever.
The game ended in t3 or t3 in unlimited in the past while rotation last longer in t9 or t6.
The rotation is like unlimited now but with higher cost. There is always a auto win card.
Stupid ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ game

you get baited by bad people, you can easily play hardcore without spending a sent, game is generous enough to play as f2p and you can build meta decks pretty easily even when they cost 10+ leggos.

Don't waste your time with this game. As long as current portalcraft exists you'll never have fun.
It would depend on your definition of "Pay to Win". If you want to be able to make 1-2 competitive decks every time a new expansion comes out, you could easily go pure free to play. IF you want to build every single competitive deck, so you can easily complete your dailies and use what ever feels fun that day, you're gonna have to spend. I find getting the battle pass and doing all my missions is enough to get everything, so it's not expensive unless you want cosmetics.
