Shadow Era looks like a rippoff of Yu-Gi-Oh or Magic..
Does this mean Hearthstone is a rippoff of that as well and omg Shadowverse could be a rippoff of hearthstone which is a rippoff of yu-gi-oh or magic because Shadow Era looks like a rippoff of Yu-Gi-Oh or Magic... But the real question is Yu-Gi-Oh a rippoff of magic or Magic is the rippoff of Yu-Gi-Oh...?

Magic came out in 1993 as far as I know. And I know for sure Kazuki Takahashi was inspired by MtG when he introduced the card game known as "Magic and Wizards" in the manga.

MtG came first and Wizards of the Coast own the rights to the Trading Card Game idea.

1991 actually. It was just released by Wizards to the general public in 1993. Before that it was a very exclusive game to get into which is why some of the old cards are worth a fortune.

Except Yu-gi-oh is way different, in the sense that there are way more combo possibilities. Also because theres an amazing amount of cards (way more than any other card game) and no rotating format, + a competent ban list to nerf things that get too out of hand. + No mana, no colours/no cards that can only be used by a certain class/leader (Hi SV :p), and certainly no effects like lifelink only being available for specific colours/classes. In other words, MtG is way more stale and is more luck based aswell thanks to the rather horrible mana system. Doesn't really deserve to even be compared to MtG - it's on another level compared to any other card game.

Oh yes and almost forgot, no summoning sickness so the matches aren't dragged out af unless playing vs a troll stall deck. Thing is, most people who think they're all that when they do well on games like HS shy away from it since mastering YGO is way more difficult because of what I said above. It would expose them as the average tcg players that they are c: (Netdecking on YGO doesn't guarantee success as much compared to other tcgs)

I'd say SV is trying to be an improvement of MtG/HS since they're all kinda on par, but SV lacks card variety to really be better than them atm. The possibly unexpected success of HS has definitely been the trigger for all these "new" card games we've been seeing lately though (even an Elder Scrolls tcg coming up, can anyone say cash grab?) so I'd say these new card games mainly base their mechanics on that while also knowing about the mechanics of the tcg giants.

Have you even played MTG's non-rotating formats? It's an entirely different game compared to standard with such a huge variety of deck playstyles. I'm not familiar with YGO but when a deck that plays value creatures and beats you to death can exist in the same format as a deck draws itself out to burn you to death as soon as possible, accusations of staleness (that do not also apply to YGO such as solved metagames etc etc) hold no water.

SV is also not trying to outdo MTG. SV is a game trying to draw the great parts about MTG within the limited confines of the mobile format. The mobile format does not allow for the interactive component of MTG's stack which is one of the, if not *the* defining mechanic of MTG. The addition of the evolution mechanic is one way to emulate the "feeling" of the stack in MTG where players can somewhat respond to plays and not just get blown out because they can't draw on curve. SV in this manner is an MTG derivative with a twist, adding the evolution mechanic to base mechanics inspired from MTG.

HS in comparison is literally just MTG with the fun parts hacked off, the strategic depths of the land system removed and a very shallow class system added in place.

And the lack of cards cannot be a serious criticism considering it's like a 5 month old game.
