Purple eyed skull platforms?

What are these things? How do I use them? I've thrown potions on them, and the potion breaks open with no visible affect. I found a golden key on one level, but couldn't find a door to put it into. I found a door on a couple levels later, but I couldn't find a way to open it. I have unlocked the first and the fifth relic, but I can't figure out where the heck the other three are. None of this is really outlined on the wiki, unless it is and I'm not familiar with the terms. This brings me back to those initial two questions: What are these things, and how do I use them?

Maybe it's poor form to answer my own question two hours later, but I thought I'd post the answer so that someone else can google search this and find it.

Firstly, they're called Shadow Stations, and will be "????" under the Misc section until you create one of these weapons.

I started just dropping all of my inventory onto this thing until it did something. Apparently it's used, for anyone that doesn't know, to convert melee and ranged weapons into shadow weapons. These shadow weapons can apparently be upgraded at an altar many times to dramatically increase the power of them, and they boost all other shadow items equipped. Upgrading the shadow weapons on a regular altar does NOT break the altar like certain other items will - which overtly tell as much in their respective tooltips. Further, the initial creation of these items seems to be able to be done with any two swords, or any two bows. Unlike the altars, they don't need to be similar. As well, primers don't work on Shadow Stations, only altars, but then primers can be used to upgrade the shadow weapons like normal on altars.

The stats are:

Shadow Sword:
Increases the power of all other shadow items by 10%
Damage: 11-13
Speed: Medium

Super Shadow Sword:
Increases the power of all other shadow items by 20%
Damage: 15-17
+5 Magic Damage
+10% Damage Resist
Speed: Medium

Ultra Shadow Sword:
Heavy attacks curse targets and deal damage based on magic damage
Increases the power of all other shadow items by 30%
Damage: 21-23
+6 Magic Damage
+15% Damage Resist
+10% Magic Resist
Speed: Medium

Mega Shadow Sword:
Heavy attacks curse targets and deal damage based on magic damage
Increases the power of all other shadow items by 40%
Damage: 32-34
+10 Magic Damage
+15% Damage Resist
+20% Magic Resist
+20% Melee Speed
Speed: Medium

Shadow Bow:
Increases the power of all other shadow items by 20%
Damage: 8-10
Speed: Medium

Super Shadow Bow:
Increases the power of all other shadow items by 20%

+10% Move Speed
Speed: Medium

Ultra Shadow Bow:
Fires an extra arrow every 2nd shot
Increases the power of all other shadow items by 20%
Damage: 16-18

Mega Shadow Bow:
Fires three arrows with minimal spread
Increases the power of all other shadow items by 20%
