This program requires the K-Lite codeck pack to work properly
This program requires codecs to play your videos. The program does not notify the user of this. Instead it just refuses to play certain videos and not give a single error message or other information.

I'm working on clearer instructions for this and will be releasing some video tutorials to the effect. There is documentation in the manual but people rarely know about the manus in Steam.

Thanks for letting people know on the forum.

I looked up K Lite on google, the website that had it was called "codecguide" and I downloaded their installer. Then the antivirus software that came with the PC (Macafee? I'm not sure) said it blocked a Trojan virus called "Artenus!3D467F74".
Did I download K Lite from the correct website? Is this a Trojan?

the videos seem to work now, but I'm not sure why it said there was a virus. I am new to the PC, was it a false alarm?

I'm not sure if it's a false alarm as I'm not sure where you downloaded klite and although it has been very useful in getting the player to work with the largest number of file formats I can't vouch for them as I don't have any interaction with them except for recommending them for setting up the codecs. I have create a tutorial however that can help people setup klite and also points out not to install the yahoo bar thing etc that it has as part of the installer. It also has the correct site to download from in it. I suspect that the macafee report relates to the optional install of this software not klite.

Here is the tutorial if you are interested :

Hope that helps.

I installed it from the "codec guide" website. It is the first result when searching for "k lite codec" on Google.

Edit: yes it's the same website as your instructions say to use. I downloaded the "mega" version.

I only ever download the basic version :) Not sure what the mega version has in it which would be relevant but it can't too bad to give it a go.

Just FYI. I downloaded K-Lite Codec Pack mentioned in this thread and it messed up YouTube video playback, Windows Media Player playback and Movie Studio Platinum playback. Pack installed a website helper or whatever it's called and closed my browsers. I had to system restore to make things right. Hopefully everything is still good tomorrow when I wake up. :steamfacepalm:

Hi

Sorry you had issues with Klite. A lot of people find it the easiest way to install all the codecs that are needed although as you mention it can and has caused problems for people.

Whirligig used to require codecs to be installed to play back videos but since then I've integrated both Media foundation (a windows codec pack that's already installed on all windows 8 and 10 systems) and Video Lan ( a built in video pack that is used in VLC). The directshow video path requires codecs to be installed and in my opinion is the best video path to use when you have the correct codecs installed. However you don't need to install klite to get these options. You can simply install the LAV codecs. I've created a guide to install these codecs here:
http://steamcommunity.com/app/451650/discussions/0/364042262873027118/

As I say though you don't need to install codecs if you are using either the Video Lan or Media foundation path.

Hopefully your restore fixed the issues which were caused by klite but if you still have problems please say and I'll see if I can help get your system back to what it was before.

Hopefully once you get to properly use Whirligig you enjoy your experience.

All the best

Phil

*Edit*
Although I've advised in the codec install guide "Warning 'use at your own risk'" when installing klite. I'm going to edit this guide removing the klite install guide. Although as mentioned before klite works as a good option for some, with the addition of the other video paths and the updates to the video plugins that no longer mean that when installing codecs you don't need to set them as prefered. It makes sense to rewrite this guide to not include klite at all, even with the warning.

Thanks for bringing this to my attention.

I would recommend using shark codec pack ( http://shark007.net/ ).
It doesn't offer malware with installation package and plays 99,9 of my videos totally fine.

Setup is easy and you can use automatic configuration (shark recommended settings) which will ask only 1 yes/no question from you. If you are able to get that wrong on 1st go and some video doesn't work, just go back to settings tool and choose the other choice instead :)

Been using this thing for years now after getting fed up with K Lite's installation bundle.

Thanks for the recommendation. I've used Klite a lot before but stopped using it once the video plugins in Whirligig were updated and only required the LAV codecs to be installed for most video playback.

Looking at the link you provide it looks like a good sturdy codec pack and anything that helps to make playing back video easier is appreciated.

A word of warning for anyone who wants to use these types of codec installs though. Whirligig comes with 3 options for video playback, Media foundation, Directshow and VideoLan. It's only Directshow that requires codecs. I personally feel that Directshow offers the best and most powerful playback option, however it does require third party installation of codecs to get the most out of it. If you do wish to use these please be very careful about what you're installing. I have no connections or affiliations with any of these codec packs outside of Whirligig. Be aware that you are installing third party software and do the appropriate checks and research before doing so.

In saying all that I very much appreciate your recommendation. The best advice you can get for things like this is from the people who actually use it.

Thanks again and all the best

Yep... and even I am currently personally recommending shark codec pack it is good to keep in mind that in the past that bundle contained malware installers also. Currently it is clean and the author has ads only on his website. He is currently relying to donations to keep his project ad free. Let's hope this will work out and the package will stay the way it is now.

It is still good practice to watch what you are clicking on installers and to what you're agreeing while doing that.
