Videos play smoothly with ffdshow, stutter with LAV
I haven't been able to get any videos to play smoothly with Whirligig until today, when I tried using the codec tweak tool to change the default decoder from LAV to ffdshow. ffdshow screws up the colors even worse than I expected, but overall it's a major improvement to 30 FPS-like stutter I was getting with LAV.

Hopefully this info is helpful for others who are having this issue. @phileday if this might be relevent to debugging the stutter problem, I can provide more info on my setup.

Thanks for the info. That's definitely interesting. I'll look into it as they might well be using a different codec set which works smoother. I'm still waiting on a plugin update which seems to be delayed at the moment. That should improve things in general but I don't know when that's going to be released now so I can't give a time frame.

Thanks for letting me know.

Hi astrohoff ,
Specifically , how you did it ?
I downloaded and install the last ffdshow version I found ( rev4532 ) and I use CodecTweakTool to "Disable" LAV filters (audio, video and splitter) and "Enable" ffdshow filters , but Whirligig don't found de decoder and don't play the video. Sure I'm doing something wrong.
Windows 10 x64

Thanks !

EDIT

Sorry , I found my mistake. Don't disable the LAV Splitter. This is my working combination :

- LAV Splitter : Enabled
- LAV Video Decoder : Disabled
- LAV Audio Decoder : Disabled
- ffdshow Video Decoder : Enabled
- ffdshow RAW Video Processor : Enabled
- ffdshow Audio Decoder : Enabled
- ...others... : Disabled

And YES , all videos play now smoothly (3840 x 1920 60 fps) , but the colors are washed out.

Thanks again for the info ,astrohoff !!

@Abel Glad you were able to get that working! You can improve the colors somewhat with the ffdshow levels adjustments. Here are the settings I am using: http://i.imgur.com/45ZNB5e.png. You can open the ffdshow configuration window by double clicking on the FFv icon in the system tray.

@ astrohoff: I have the same problem with getting a very bright video playback, causing washed-out colors. This does not happen when using LAV filter, although the stutter is annoying. I have noticed that when disabling LAV and enabling ffdshow, if I change the level settings from default the videos will freeze very often for a split second from time to time during playback. The bigger the settings change, the worse it becomes. It seems like a lot of graphics processing is then required because every single frame has to be processed. What we really need is a video post-processing during playback - just a simple "brightness" and "contrast adjustment".

Hi

The brightness I could probably get working but I'm not sure about the contrast. I'll look into it and see if I can come up with a solution. I noticed myself that that slight jumpyness doesn't happen in the beta 3.8 as long as the video is below 2k which makes me think that it might well be something that will be fixed in future versions once the video plugin guys get their latest plugin to work as smooth as the old version.

In the meantime I'll look at contrast and brightness controllers for future versions.

Cheers

Phil
