The original trio is just sooo synergized with each other that the rest of the party members have no hope of competing.
So in terms of combat, my favorite team will always be Bretto, Gully, and Garrison.
When I gave Monika and the other characters a fair shake, used them all for an entire dungeon, I put her in the tank role. She has a skill that taunts enemies for one attack, and a trait that doubles it to two. However, very importantly, you don't lose a stack of taunt if the attack misses. Thus, the idea is that you taunt, then maximize your dodge so you don't have to reapply the taunt that often, allowing you some time to attack as well. This can be good, but without any way to protect the team as a whole like Gully can, random or AOE attacks can be much more of a problem.
But on the other hand Alumon is awesome. Heals gives shields, which means using at full potention, no over heal waste. His Devastation damage hits so hard. Vampiric heals & deals damage same time. Even his model looks cool.
What changes to Bretto's late game? Can he do more dmg & heal than Alumon? He learn any skill regens mana like Alumons?
I always run Gully (tank), Garrizon (dmg), and Alumon (healer + dmg).
I tried for fun Monika, Knolan and Garrison. I can't get out of this team. All of them are monsters in damage. Monica can taunt if needed (and untouchable) and Knolan can heal quite strongly. And Garrison well ... he can Garrison.
I always play 3 DPS from NG to NG+, from start to end.
Why do you need a healer and a tank when you can OTK everything ? ^^'
