You can tell if people own the game by the mouse icon next to their name. I only bought the game a couple of hours ago, so I can't really comment on the story as yet. First impressions are pretty good though.
I'm lvl 16 righ now and all the talks I've gotten while 'resting' in the tavern were pretty shallow - protect Gilly, let's go do some training; that's about all it amounted to.
Gilly has this glove that's supposed to be her father's memento (not a spoiler, it's written on the item's description), but so far she's mentioned nothing meaningful about it.
There've been no life-altering choices made by the characters, nothing dramatic from their past, nothing even remotely resembling some kind of major 'reveal' about them. And with that, I agree with those reviewers - the story is lacking in those departments, though I haven't experienced the full thing yet, as I'm only at about the mid point.
You get a bit more as you keep resting. You'll learn tid bits about Red's past interactions, the old man's drinking issues, and some more of G's... softer side. Or my favorite, Red refusing a bunch of Gully's compliments, followed by the two of them going out to blow ♥♥♥♥ up.
I've not seen all of the inn scenes though. Game says you'll get some "sometimes," which makes me think it allows some every X levels or after every dungeon... So there are probably several I've not gotten.
From what I have gotten, I can concur, nothing amazing revealed... It's more about giving little details and flushing out characters, not making the story bigger... Just more full.
All in all it's really good to see Joe Mad brain child(he had some idea about the Battle Chasers world since he was a kid)in that medium as well. I cannot see what he did made for this game and what is he planning for a continuation of the comic in the future.
