I'm having this same problem. As soon as the arrow starts to spin I press the correct arrow, but it doesn't work, especially in sequence. It just makes both disappear in black smoke. This seems far too tricky for something which is presumably aimed at children.

It disappears in black smoke when you press the wrong key. Which arrow keys are you using? Arrow-only keys or numpad keys? If you're using your numpad, try switching to your regular arrows and see if that helps. Some games are not coded right to accept numpad arrow commands.
