General tips:
1. There are lone large fish that are easily taken out such as barracuda. Just travel around the map and avoid attacking any fish and you'll be able to explore in peace. Find the large lone fish that you believe you can take on and kill them until you have enough gene's to make them.
2. Don't mess with any surface boats until you have armor piercing units like fangtooth. Feel free to mess with submarines if you can get behind them.
3. You can find fangtooth fairly early on in reef that's in a deep pit. Fangtooth are basically glass cannons and are easily killed by you provided you don't close to melee. Their secondary attack just plain pierces armor and kill any fish or boat in mere seconds yet the AI doesn't actually use the attack very often.
4. If the only reefs you find are protected by boats or large fish, try heading to opposite end of the map to see if there are easier reefs.
5. I never really encountered any fish that attack you on sight that wasn't a reef guardian. So rest easy and feel free to explore. This is a very open ended game. Though I noticed that fish will attack you if you bump into them, that is something that is very easy to avoid.
At the start of the game, if you have salmon then go with salmon, otherwise try to get barracuda (excellent kiting ability, just run away while broadsiding the enemy to death). Once you have fangtooth, you should just go with an entire fleet of fangtooth (secondary attack does massive damage and pierces armor). Fangtooth will beat everything except great white shark.
You can find fangtooth swarm at E15 N8 depth -40
Click the the fish you are playing as on the fleet selection screen and then it will show the list of fish you have which you can then switch to any fish you currently have.
The school options are just seperate fleet configurations you can use. You appear to be limited to only 6 fish in total.
Now is I can't for the life of me figure out how to take down the synthetic fish? I have a fleet of fangtooths but I get destroyed! I see there is an achievement for beating synthetic fish with just sardines so I'm assuming im just missing something with this boss fight?
You can't beat the synthetic fish with fangtooth, you should beat all the other reefs and build up a fleet of fish armed with lasers. You can win with small fish like sardines because they can easily dodge the large volumes of laser fire the synthetic fish puts out. Generally you want a fish armed with a long range laser (which is most of them) and small enough to dodge enemy fire.
People have beaten the synthetic fish with:
Maxed out sardines (plasma cannon)
King crab (phasers)
Baracuda (broadsides)
Great white shark (forward laser)
and probably more. Just experiment around.
Great whites show up at low depths like at the bathtub of blood or the dead whale. It's tough trying to kill them though so try to find bathtub of blood and use the rock maze to get the great white stuck so you can kill em.
Also when you fight the synthetic fish keep in mind you should be using manual aim and not lock on aiming because its such a big target you can hit it reliably without lock on.
No you are using the right weapon (its the only ranged attack that great whites have), have you levelled up the great white shark (All fish upgrade as they consume food and DNA)? And are you setting all fish to "fire at will"? And lastly, are you using manual aiming?
No manual aiming is activated by pressing the right mouse button. You should check the controls menu. It's the button that brings up a crosshair and lets you shoot whereever you want. If you use lock on you will miss a lot.
If you use any other command other than fire at will, your allies are more likely to get shot by failing to evade and more likely to miss.
Enjoy the post game =)
