Just how SFW is the Steam version, and can I run it outside of steam at all like some games
Hey all, looking to introduce this amazing VN to a friend but well, they don't use steam at all nor do they really like full-on sex-scenes (implied etc is fine) nor excessive fanservice.

I originally played outside of Steam but bought to support and eventually reread (which I have not done yet, probably when alternative releases), so I know nothing of the steam release changes other than it's apparently censored.

So I was hoping you guys can answer me just how censored it is, and if it's at all possible to run it outside of the steam client legitimately.

The default, censored version of Extra (I haven't played Unlimited yet, but it should be the same) doesn't have any full-on sex scenes, and while there is some fanservice (more than I'd like), it isn't terrible.

As for running outside of Steam... I just tried launching the .exe from Windows Explorer, yet it still showed up on Steam as me being in-game. I dont' know what it does if steam isn't running.
*edit* Just tried it. With Steam closed, when I launch the muvluv .exe, it first opens and logs into Steam before the game will start.

Ah bugger. I had hoped it might be like Umineko and some other misc games, which can be run entirely standalone.

Thanks anyway.

If you're looking for an entry point into the genre, you can't go wrong with Steins;Gate. It's amazing, and while romance is present in it, it's not the focus. It's got more of an adventurous feel, so if your friend is into RPGs it makes for a less jarring transition for storytelling.

Also, why doesn't your friend use Steam?

Then show them the Clannad anime. Haven't watched it myself, but it's another way to get into VNs. And again, Steins;Gate. It's also on PS3 and Vita, and a non-Steam PC version is also available, I think the website to buy it from is Rice Digital.
