When Jaeger Sr, met and talk with Shadis, he's like a man from the future. He know medical, which he cure a plague and people called him a hero. Also when he talk to Shadis, he asking how the government, economic and cultural form inside the wall.
My thoughts is that Jaeger had disagree with the Beast man. The Beast want complete obliterate the wall, whereas Jaeger want peace solution, but both aim the same thing, that is the power of the 1st Titan to control the whole Titans who plague the world. Since Titan can be called immortal or long lifespan, Jaeger Sr are came from pre-world before Titan's attack/created by the 1st Emperor.
But I still can't figure out why Jaeger Sr decide to die and make Eren to be his successor to the power. Is it because the 1st Emperor's ideology also influence him, hence he had no choice but to let innocent mind taking control of the power so the ideology won't influence Eren ? Will see it in the next release.
The First King was the only one (excluding the Ackermans and Asians) who knew the truth and was put there to control the people, stop the Scouts from going too far, finding out too much. Hence, the first brigade stopping the advancement of technology and exterminating the invention of flight. If the human's ever did find out the first king could just rewrite their memories and start over.
I think the shifters are victims of this outside society too. It's likely that the titans were all part of the shifters' people before they were taken and used in this experiment. Most of the shifters believe they need to get the coordinate in order to turn the titans back into humans, but have no care for the pre-existing humans as they are not of the same race.
Grisha however, thought differently.
Grisha thought he could take the coordinate from royalty without any innocent deaths, however as he did this, the rest of the shifters (who he hadn't seen for 20 years) enacted their plan and took Wall Maria. Grisha realised anyone could be a shifter and that he would never be safe, combined with the grief for Carla he decided to give the power to Eren to hide it.
My new favourite line is said by Erwin: "What is it you think you see? Who do you think the real enemy is here?" because it is more relevant than ever now.
I don't think the titans or the shifters are the real enemies anymore. I think they're all just victims of this outside society.
But this are just guessing and opinion. But I think the direction isn't far tho.
This. No way that they are just "random books". Likely related to the outside world in some way, is my guess.
Perhaps another books might explain the titans or technology of the other world who knows but I do feel like at least one of those books holds the history that wasn't altered by the Reiss family.
far as canonicity goes yeah up the game follows up to the defeat of the Female Titan (it does deviate a tiny bit in some parts for the same of gameplay such as when you fight other titans when you are suppose to be fleeing from her during the forest of giants section but for the most part it follows the manga/anime).
After the Female Titan however the game completely goes off and away from canon.
