Personally if im not using a character who actually can control the squad e.g. Armin(choose focus, press y to attack parts, invaluable with weak characters, brings down titans very fast) I just leave the squad on fan out at all times and destroy everything myself...never seem to need them with strong characters anyway.
I just ran a mission using Eren. My henchmen attacked once their portrait was fully lit up. Then they did nothing until it fully charged again.
It's just likely most people miss it, because when you first highlight a titan, it's usually an undesirable body part, or you're moving quick, or the camera's on a weird angle, and you miss seeing them attack. Pay close attention to when you target a titan, and their portraits, and you'll likely see something happen.
Focus does work pretty well SOMETIMES. It's because they need to recharge every time they try to hit, And a lot of times they miss because of the angle they're actually trying. I would say it's more 50/50 for Focus.
I think it's just Armin, Henge, and Erwin, but I could be wrong.
Sasha/Conny: teammates attract titan attention more because you have stealth skill.
Armin/Erwin/Hange: you have tactician's eyes so you can order them to attack part anytime you want.
Christa/Jean: those have leadership and skills that enhance teammates. They get a lot of additional damage from teammates after you strike enemy.
Eren/Mikasa/Levy are just stupid dps so if you play them, no wonders you think teammates are useless.
7 out of 10 characters get bonus from having teammates, 5 out of of 10 characters have teammates as their primary damage (after getting A/S ranks in team).
Who said they are useless?
P.S. Setting them to guard or fan out as Levy sometimes helps you not fail objective or disperse them when there's a lot of titans around. Not always though...
For example, Christa isn't an amazing fighter nor can she directly command cadets like Armin, but boy she fills that battle signal really fast and it lasts a lot longer than for rest of characters. She simply melts with her squad things really fast.
and you only have 6 hours gameplay so i don't think you made it to True attack mode yet
True attack mode is where they are actually helpful in doing chip damage.
Guard is for when you want to go out and kill all the Titans, but don't want to defend those blue shields on the map.
But I don't use it, since I can always boost back to base and defend them.
Yes but Armin can hold up to 6 canisters and 12 Grenades(not exactly sure about the grenades).
Armin's final ability increases the attack power of team mates the more that joins
Erwin can hold up to 5 canisters and 10 grenades.
Erwin's final ability increases the attack power of Decisive Battle.
Erwin is the only one with the order command that has chain attack.
Hange can also hold up to 4 canisters and 8 grenades.
Her ultimate is kinda meh, but the increase in Firebomb and Cannons to traps CAN come in handy. Her attack power does increase depending on how many limbs are off the titan which is a nice bonus.
Also keep in mind that with the leader / resource type of characters you should make good use of cannons whenever they are available - that will save you a lot of gas and durability, since they can't compare with the fighters at speed of taking down targets vs resources invested.
