It's pretty much the same with small changes.
The gameplay in terms of how you attack the titans is also a little bit different in 2. But I think you're right, game 2 includes nearly everything of game 1 and has much more content. In my opinion, if you don't own the first game, than you can skip it and go directly to the second one.
That's true, AOT1 is more detailed in some parts of its story.
I was thinking about it a few days ago. It would be soooooo cool if they made an original/spin-off story in the AOT universe with the main characters or all new characters. Then they can just go wild with the story!

I'm sure that with more freedom they could create something truly magnificent.
Don't get me wrong, the story of the Anime is very good, but some parts of it can't be translated well into interactive media like videogames.
A new story in the same world than the Anime, but specially created for videogames, could really add to the experience.
