Anyone knows if PS4 Controller works again with this?
It's been a while, but I asked a long time ago if anyone knew how to make a PS4 Controller work with this game.

I already played and finished it with a PS3 one, but it broke and now I only have a PS4 one, but. . . I can't replay this beautiful game since PS4 Controllers don't work with it, help.

(Though I did finish the game once, I kinda wanna go back and game it again)

I played this from start to finish on my dual shock 4 with Steam Input (not DS4Windows) and had no issues.

PS button icons show up correctly instead of Xbox ones and rumble works too. Even the LED light color changes to red when you're very low on health.

Could you provide more help pretty please?
Is there any config when RIght Clicking the game and going to Controllers?
Did you use cable or bluetooth like I do?

I do use DS4Windows with every game, and I'm surprised this is the only one that doesn't work with or without. . . And also, to the question above, did you change anything in Steam Big Picture?
I may be wrong, but I think you can only have either Steam Input OR DS4Windows running, not both.

I used to play my games via the USB cable but the flimsy connector has been causing random disconnecting recently so I switched over to Bluetooth.

If you want to play with DS4Windows:
  1. Disable "Steam Input" in the controller settings for the game under the Steam Library list:

Right click "Monster Boy" in the Steam Library list > Properties > Controller > "Disable Steam Input" from the dropdown list

  2. Also check your DS4Windows profile (double click it) and click on "Other" tab to make sure "Emulated Controller" is set to Xbox 360 if you want it to work with Steam.

If you want to play with Steam Input:
  1. Close DS4Windows

  2. Restart Steam

  3. Connect your Dualshock 4 controller to your PC

  4. Enable "Playstation Configuration Support":

Steam > Settings > Controller > General Controller Settings > "Playstation Configuration Support" check mark should be ticked

  5. Enable "Steam Input" in the controller settings for the game under the Steam Library list:

Right click "Monster Boy" in the Steam Library list > Properties > Controller > "Enable Steam Input" from the dropdown list

Give this a shot and fingers crossed it does the trick!

None of that worked sadly, I'm afraid this game does not work with PS4 controllers, no idea how to make it work

That's unfortunate. Last ditch thing to try is verifying the integrity of the game files in case something is messed up with the game itself:

Steam Library > right click "Monster Boy And The Cursed Kingdom" > Properties > Local Files > "Verify Integrity of game files..."

Let it finish verifying then try launching the game with the Dualshock 4 connected. The current build of the game (seen on the top right of the title screen) should be "May 12 2022, 11:10:29"

Yes. Steam and DS4Windows (or its successor InputMapper) need exlusive access to the controller and will interfere with each other occasionally.

I heard from some people that they have issues using bluetooth. I play with my PS4 controller without any issues (cable).

Not running any third party software as the Steam PS4 controller support works solid for me for every game Ihave on Steam. And if not, I just temporarily activate the playstation configuration assistant in the big picture mode controller setup and it will emulate an Xbox controller (you can then rebind keys as well for every single game). Don't use this assistant all the time, I found some very few games that may act weird if Steam emulates an Xbox controller (analog stick may turn into a 8-way digital control rather being 360 degrees and such). I only use this assistant whenever the PS4 controller is not detected at all for the game, after palying I deactivate it again. Works incredibly good at least for me.

For Monsterboy it doesn't matter if I have the assistant acitvated or not, works liek a charm in both modes. So if you controller is detected, it is not because of the Steam controller settings I think.

Unplug any unnecessary USB device, especially input devices. As some people mention to have issues with this particular game, I wouldn't too much be surprised it is either a software service running in the background that is interfering, or even a special USB keyboard or mouse (driver) no one ever will think about that those will make the game detect the wrong device rather than your PS4 controller.

In generally, Monsterboy supports PS4 controller over Steam.
I did a bit more experimenting on this and found that Steam Input must be enabled in order to get controller support on the current build of the game (May 12 2022, 11:10:29).

I managed to get the game working with my DualShock 4 (over bluetooth wireless) with Steam Input enabled if:
  • The current DS4Windows profile is set to emulate an Xbox 360 controller. The game refused to work with DualShock 4 emulation. Also the light bar on the DS4 won't change to red when low on health.

  • DS4Windows closed/not running. Just pair the DS4 to your PC and run the game.

For the second point, if you use HidHide together with DS4Windows you'll need to manually unhide the physical DS4 controller (Sony Interactive Entertainment Wireless Controller) from the "Devices" tab. If you prefer using DS4Windows over Steam Input for general gaming, this can be a pain in the butt to toggle and I had no luck trying to create an exception for the game (Launcher64.exe) under HidHide's "Applications" tab. If anyone knows any solutions to this, please do share!

Note: I used a DS4 v2 controller

I ended up upgrading my PC to a

GT 1650
Ryzen 5 2400

And now I can emulate the game on PC, so I think I'm good to go haha, I've been catching up with this beautiful game, sad that I cannot play it the normal way, but I got it emulated now! :3
That's great to hear! Glad you managed to sort it out in the end
