I think your decision must be based on what you prefer to play. Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap is a faithful remaster of the 1989 original game from Sega Master System and therefore a smaller and simpler game that's faster to complete but still a lot of fun for around 5 hours. Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap was an important milestone for the series back in the golden days of cartridge gaming. Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom is an entirely new game, a sequel to the Wonder Boy in Monster World series of games with 20+ hours of playtime and a more modern gameplay approach. The level design isn't restricted in any way so the developers had more freedom. Both developer studios are friends and based in France. Dragon's Trap is from Lizardcube, Monster Boy comes from Game Atelier.

The 2017's remastered Wonder Boy?

My opinion:
For content amount, better hit box, new contents (including music) and length, Monster Boy it is. It's a huge game in comparison.
For bigger sprites, faster uninterrupted heroic offensive action early in the game and remastering the old Master System and PC-Engine/TurboGrafix16 in high quality, Winder Boy 2017 it is. I also liked the music remixes more here even tho they are in less variant than the above.

My choice is both of them. Get both as they are both worth it. I'd start with Wonder boy because it's shorter in comparison.

All of them! The series is very cool!
humm im not really fan of the first game.
After the castle part, important part (no spoil) i want really play the old Wonder Boy games (i finished only Wonder boy 3 dragon's trap) before continuing Monster Boy! (or maybe i will later)
Thanks for reviving the series!

Play both. Dragon's Trap first. This game has references to it and the other Wonder Boy games so the more Wonder Boy games you've played the more you appreciate this game. If you want to play all the important ones, in my opinion, here's the order:

1. Wonder Boy in Monster Land - SEGA Master System
2. Wonder Boy 3: The Dragon's Trap - Direct sequel to the previous game with the same protagonist
3. Wonder Boy in Monster World - SEGA Megadrive aka Genesis
4. Monster World IV - SEGA Megadrive aka Genesis
5. Monster Boy - This game

Forgot to mention that Wonder Boy 2017 is challenging and difficult in action more than this one. Expect to die in it more early in the game if you're new to it.

This is easy for me since I'd recommend Monster Boy over anything released in the last few years. It brought me back to a time when games were released in a complete and playable state, and it reminded me that they can actually bring happiness and joy into your life. That may sound like hyperbole, but I've spent most of my 22 hours playing the game smiling. I'm not even finished yet. Only just reached the Haunted House. That's because I'm savouring every minute.

Sequel plz.

In terms of order of preference, mine will go like this:

1: Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom
2: Wonder Boy in Monster World (Monster World 3)
3: Monster World 4
4: Wonder Boy 3: Monster Lair
5: Wonder Boy
6: Wonder Boy 3: The Dragon's Trap
7: Wonder Boy in Monster Land

I actually don't like the shape-shifting mechanic much, which I know is an unpopular opinion. I prefer to just play the game as Wonder Boy with a bunch of items and abilities. But Monster Boy is so good I can overlook the fact that you barely spend any time as Wonder Boy.

I'd also love to see a remake of Monster Lair with all of the arcade levels (the Mega Drive/ Genesis version is missing about half the stages).

EDIT: Oh yeah, and am I going mad or was an HD version of Wonder Boy not available on Steam at one point? All I see now is an HD version that's due out on the 8th of August. Did they withdraw it from sale for a revamp or something?
