Yes, it does not need to end, but as u can see developers shut down the server and didn't communicate about that, Creator of the game isn't implicated anymore.
Actually they can't add additional content, because the code of the game is messy.
To revive atulos Online, they should rewrite the game in a proper language and fix some bug.
We can still hope someone will revive the game and game servers, but it seems that the owner of atulos online don't care at all.
You are probably correct about the code and server. Online games in general are difficult to run (sometimes expensive). Adding new content (other than PVP) will increase sales from new players and bring back old players. Many players including myself have no interest in open arena PVP. Tournaments are different though. You could do lots with tournaments...and a town.
I send a mail to the creator of the game to tell him about the servers shut down;

I can't connect to the game neither "Please try again" It is prolly back offline
