Well... Descent 3's studio was... actually still technically the same studio...? Well, half of it. But also with some new members to fill in the gaps iirc. It's... a bit complicated. Technically the ones who worked on Overload are the same ones who worked on Descent 3 from what I recall... because the other half of the studio became Volition. Look into the history of Parallax Software and Volition if you wanna know more details.
However, the part where the project was, nonetheless, handled very differently, by only about half of the original team, definitely does show. I mean, I say that as somebody who actually likes Descent 3 from what I've played of it, but it's pretty obvious there were... things not going to plan with that game's development still, and I really do get why 3 is so divisive like that and don't blame people for not liking it honestly.
Looks like we have to play Descent 1,2, and Overload forever.
Honestly, I think the Descent genre will remain under the radar for most people. 6DOF games usually don't even touch on the true "freedom" portion of that acronym like Descent did. Having complete control over an object in 3D space is complicated and I would go even as far as to say it's too complicated for the average player.
That said, i kickstart everything I see that attempt to dip its toes into this Genre.
Play Overload with OLMOD and you are fine
This is very true and likely why the genre will always remain niche. Like arena FPS, not only is the skill ceiling high, the floor is also high
