I'm pretty sure this is already a thing.

That's pretty awesome, I'd play it as is just for the nostalgic value. Doesn't seem like they can convert and import directly into the level editor yet, but hopefully they'll keep building up the tool.

Still wouldn't mind seeing a bona fide remake; getting those old levels into the editor would make for excellent reference for someone to actually flesh out level redesigns...scale the meshes (or whatever) up a bit, add some extra geometry, fine tune, add a fresh coat of paint, done. Would also come in handy if the editor allows import of custom assets, we could remodel the old bots. Suppose we'll find out what we can actually do with the thing when they release it.

The level editor is actually quite similar to the original Descent - everything is cubes. The main differences are that you have subdivision/deformation between cubes to make organic-looking caves, and a ton of 3D "decals" to add details to the walls (picture "texture 2" in the old games as if it were a 3D model instead of a texture).

Any news on when this is coming?

There's a beta version out for those who backed the Kickstarter at that particular tier, but the current guesstimate is that it will release for all next week.

Is it unhealthy that I'm checking for a release announcement nearly on a daily basis? I think I may be losing sleep...

That settles it. This has now become a public health issue. The devs have to release for the welfare of the community ;)
Don't forget here...............

So am I. It's not unhealthy until my wife starts complaining. And that will surely happen after the editor released...
