Anyone with a Vive know how well it plays in VR? Also, the game page states:

"The VR mode for this game requires the use of a gamepad or a keyboard and mouse."

Does that mean I can't use a HOTAS setup with VR?

You can use HOTAS with VR, just not the Rift/Vive controllers.

Is the VR front Overload worth buying a Windows VR set? Of does a 21 - 9 screen a better job?

That's personal choice, just be aware that no current VR headset has the visual quality of a monitor.

Also be aware no monitor has the immersion of a VR set. Not all game types translate well into VR but a space ship games or any game where you are in a cockpit flying around VR is amazing and a monitor can't hold a candle to the experience.

As for the question of if VR would be worth it that's a completely subjective decision. My opinion is overwhelmingly yes, but I've only tried the Vive and I have no idea how close Windows VR comes to that. Even with the Vive/Oculus though money might be an issue, it's not a small purchase.

Is there any planned support for the joystick/buttons on the Rift controllers?

I know asking for 6DOF controller support is a bit much, but dual joysticks were practically made for Descent..at least that was my finding after playing Descent Maximum on the PS1 with the Dual Flight Sticks.
