Each player can use their controller. You can also "split" each controller and play 4 people using only two controllers, two players on each controller, for example.
Playing on keyboard is not obligatory, there's a screen where you can choose the input devices and add additional players, prior to each stage.
I really like the game design, seems to be a perfect mix between action and strategy. But honestly, the levels can be frustrating at times. But it's really fun when playing with friends.
You can also press Y on Xbox controller so it opens up the Controller Split Settings, if needed, to set the input for each player.
It just adds keyboard to player 1 if you press space when opening the game.
